It is holistic from the beginning. What this means is that the overall project is looked at in its entirety.
At each stage of design, every need is considered. So often, it is learned that one small item in the process
affects many other things--often in large ways. This is why it must be looked at by the Architect holistically.
The process really, however, begins with the Client. At the onset of the project, the Architect and the Client
meet to get acquainted and to discuss specific needs. The Architect is not only listening to the Client about
their specific goals, but he is also trying to understand why the need is there and who the client is. It is
very important to the process for the Architect to understand who the Client really is. The more that is learned,
the better the results will be.
At this point the design begins, when all of the pertinent information is gathered about the client, the site,
the community, etc.. This is the fun part and it is also the most difficult to predict. Basically, a sketch or a
concept forms regarding the project. We call this stage schematic design.
From this it grows as the needs of the client are realized more fully, the design develops, issues with code and
zoning are determined and budgets re-established. Often, this stage of the process can be very dry. It involves
working out necessary legalities, choosing materials to use, and projecting costs that can be anticipated.
The process of architectural representation continues with the writing and the administration of construction
contracts. The documents that the Architect puts together at this point helps to insure that you get what you are
expecting with your project. It is a legal binding contract that is now defining what the project is to be when it
is built. This protects you from many pitfalls that can happen during and after construction.
Next, at the beginning of construction, the Architect is your expert in the field as you face many difficult issues.
This is where the administration of the contract happens in connection with a selected Contractor. The Architect
meets directly with the Contractor on a regular basis and issues are dealt with promptly. The Client is kept appraised
of all meetings, communications and field visits. The Architect is there to protect you, the Client, and your interests
as your project is completed.
And this is where your project becomes reality.
